Knitted Hats? Now there's an idea!

The Guardian has discovered knitting, well not knitting per se, but knitwear. (It's always fun spotting a Grauniad revelation. This week (Saturday 27th October) we have Jess Cartner-Morley discussing the drawbacks of chunky cardis.

Personally, I don't think there are any, even if I'm not an anorexic super-tall model - my words, not hers.

However, said publication has also discovered knitted hats.

(not these, but I like illustrations)

On a couple of forums recently, posts have commented on how dirt-cheap knitwear is when it appears in stores. As a result non-knitters receiving gifts of socks and other hand-knitted goodies do not appreciate a). the cost of the yarn and; b). more importantly, the work that had gone into making the item.

Not if they read yesterday's "Weekend" they don't. In a selection of seven hats, while the cheapest were £7 and £20... the range of prices included a £42 bobble hat in stocking stitch (with a 2x2 rib)' a £79 fairisle hat and a £110 beanie hat, also in stocking stitch. Ladies (and gents)! We could be rich!

Hey Fi! That was an interesting blog post! It really irritates me to see knitwear so cheap, though it'll have been done on machines I imagine, cutting out the human resources aspect.. but still.. y'know.
Anyway it's good to see them being so expensive in the paper :D That's excellent! We're in the wrong jobs!

Crikey, £110 for a beanie hat?! Hmmm, where's that spare yarn...

Absolutely Vixx - machine knitting does make the product cheaper, but then it gives the non-knitters totally unrealistic views. So, those socks that we lovingly knit for them them are treated with a 'oh, thanks'.

I only knit for people who appreciate it.

Piglottie - I sometimes wonder if I should be selling on Ebay!! :-) But shucks, I just ain't a designer label yet.

I agree I only knit for those who appreciate my efforts fully! :)

Sell on etsy not ebay ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYokLWfqbaU

I often wonder at the 'cost' of making something knitted if we were to include our labour, even paid at minimum wage. It's scary!

Hi Fiona, just catching up on some of your posts. Like the socks. I havnt knitted any for OH yet so i've yet to have the joys of larger socks.
You certainly travel around a bit. Mind you its not the same if its for conferences! But your photos look good despite the rain. Those knitted hats! mad prices. Think I'll start my own business and earn some money.

Hmmmmm.....if only I could convince someone to pay me £110 for a hat.

Oh well, for now I'll just have to keep knitting for the love of it.

Knitwear is definitely cheap in the stores, but get people to look at the quality and you can see that you pay for what you get. I made Ollie's beanie just the other day from one ball of Wendy Fusion. At @£3 a ball, that was a bragain knit!! :)
